Personal development, health and physical education

Personal development, health and physical education (PDHPE) is mandatory from Kindergarten to Year 10.

According to the NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA), students are expected to participate in PDHPE for between 1.5 and 2.5 hours per week in Kindergarten to Year 6.

PDHPE provides students with opportunities to explore issues that are likely to impact on the health, safety and wellbeing of themselves and others – now and in the future. Students also participate in challenging and enjoyable physical activity, improving their capacity to move with skill and confidence.

Sport and sport houses

Children are placed in one of three houses. These houses are named after the Aboriginal tribes from the Mid North Coast – Biripi, Ngamba and Worimi.

House colours are: Biripi – red, Ngamba – blue, Worimi – yellow.

All classes K-6 have sport once a week and class based PE/H/PD. Students are given the opportunity to participate in a variety of activities aimed at developing physical skills and promoting good sportsmanship.

The school also has an annual swimming, cross country and athletics carnival. There are trophies for the winning houses of the carnivals. In all sporting activities emphasis is placed on maximum participation and improvement of skills and confidence.

Sporting trials are held at the school to select children to compete for the chance to represent the Manning Zone in Primary Schools Sports Association activities. (PSSA)

Competitive team sport is carried out in the Manning PSSA gala days. Teams may include soccer, basketball, cricket, rugby league, hockey, netball and touch football.

Swimming

It is anticipated that an intensive swimming course for non–swimmers in Years 2 to 6 will be held each year in term one, with the emphasis on learning to swim for safety purposes, not on style. The annual School Swimming Carnival is usually conducted early in Term l at the Manning Aquatic Centre.
